Community Outreach Winter/Spring Update

Things have been very busy and will continue to be busy in the Auburn Community. The recent events that the Community Outreach program have helped co-organize were:

Santa’s Village , which was held before Winter Break , was well – attended by both members of Auburn High School and the Auburn Community.
Community members were also allowed to take photos with the cast members of the school’s rendition of Beauty and the Beast during the Saturday matinee.
Auburn High School Season Basketball Tickets for Community Members who have continuously supported Auburn High School with donations have also gone out.
The Auburn High School Art students successfully displayed some of their creations at Starb ucks in the weeks leading up to winter break.

Upcoming events that the Community Outreach program will help to co-sponsor are:

An Easter Extravaganza will be held at Auburn High School for Community members sometime during the Spring.
A Homecoming Committee has also been organized to start planning for Homecoming 2010 in Sept/Oct.

Santa’s Village Holiday Party

The Santa’s Village Holiday Party for the Auburn school children (up through grade 5) will take place on Thursday, December 17 from 3:00 – 5:00. The festivities will be held in the Auburn High School Cafeteria! There will be games, crafts, Santa, and other holiday characters! Come enjoy the festivities and have a picture taken with Santa! The $3.00 admission fee will go directly to the Auburn High School Student Help Fund.

The Thanksgiving Can Drive

The Thanksgiving Can Drive was a huge success! Mr. Hurley’s Anatomy and Physiology class and Mrs. LeBeaume’s AP World History class won the pizza parties! Over 1000 cans and $300. were collected and then donated to Auburn Youth and Family Services. Thanks to everyone who contributed and helped!

October’s Events

Many events took place in the month of October. First and foremost, Rachel’s Challenge was a huge event. On October 28, all of the high school students attended a very moving presentation made by Craig Scott, Rachel’s brother. Additionally, community members were invited to an after school event also presented by Craig Scott. About 400 community members attended the evening presentation. The Halloween Haunted Hall was enjoyed by many community youngsters. Between 400-500 children took part in the yearly hauntings, which took place at the high school. In addition to journeying down the scary Haunted Hall, children decorated cookies, made Halloween crafts, enjoyed treats, and listened to spooky music. Proceeds from the event were given to the High School’s Student Help Fund, which provides clothing, blankets, lunch money, etc. to students in need.

Up Coming Events:

The Fine Arts Department, in conjunction with Starbucks Cafe, is hosting an art show highlighting student artwork. The reception will be held at Starbucks on Tuesday, November 17 from 6:00 to 8:00. The show will run through the month of December. Student artwork is available for purchasing, and all proceeds from the show will benefit Auburn Youth and Family Services.

Community members who have donated/contributed to Auburn High School will soon receive Athletic Passes as a thank you for their generous support of the high school students. The passes will allow recipients to access all home basketball games during the 2009-2010 season.

Santa’s Workshop is scheduled for Thursday, December 17 from 3:30 to 5:30. Children will have the opportunity to meet and take pictures with Santa. Many holiday activities are also planned for this event. More information will be forthcoming.

Community Outreach Plans for 2009-2010

The Community Outreach Committee met earlier this month to gather ideas for the 2009-2010 school year. The ideas listed below include successful activities from last school year and possible new activities for this school year.

Children’s Activities – Halloween, Christmas, and Easter activities will offered this year. Proceeds from these events will benefit local charities.
Studio Art students are hosting a show at Starbucks beginning in November to raise money for Auburn Youth and Family Services.
A district-wide art show is being planned for the 2009-2010 school year.
Community members who have generously donated to Auburn High School will once again receive free admission tickets to all home basketball games.
The Ronald E. Prouty Media Center, in conjunction with Barnes and Noble, will be sponsoring a Book Fair in March.
National Honor Society students will be available to rake and shovel for local senior citizens.
Student Council is sponsoring an event called Rachel’s Challenge, an organization which promotes kindness.
Senior Citizen Prom
Community-wide Homecoming for 2010-2011 (Whole community event, tents , moon bounces, parade, dunk tanks, outside vendors, etc.)
Movie Night in the auditorium
Game previews in the auditorium
Turkey Run/Drop 5k for Thanksgiving with proceeds to benefit the local charities
Health Fair (educational booths including fire and police departments)
Science Fair at night

Event News

The Auburn High School Media Center Book Fair held at Barnes and Noble on Thursday, March 12, and Friday, March 13 was a great success. The community support was fabulous. Many students, faculty, and parents enjoyed the activities presented on both days. Many of the high school students participated in events, such as teaching others how to fold Origami, reading books to children during story time, and singing in the Jazz Choir performances. Without the AHS student volunteers, the book fair would not have been possible. A special thanks goes out to Mr. Pietrello, Ms. Bailey, Mr. Jim Adams, and Ms. Halsdorff for their participation in the event. The proceeds from the event will benefit the Auburn High School Media Center.
This upcoming Tuesday, the Community Outreach Committee, along with the Student Council and the National Honor Society, will host an egg hunt for the local children. The event will run on April 7, 2009 from 3:30 to 5:30. The Easter Bunny may even make a surprise appearance! Additionally, children will be able to participate in many Easter-related crafts. This is a free event, generously supported by Student Council and National Honor Society students.

Community Outreach Update

The last two months for the Community Outreach Committee have been very busy! Both the Halloween Haunted House and Santa’s Village were big hits with the community members. The children had a blast participating in all the creative actitivies that the Student Council, National Honor Society, and Link Crew students organized. “Santa” (thank you Kyle Beedy and Nichola Kahale) was also in attendance for children to meet. The procedes from the events went back to the community (Auburn Youth and Family Services) to help Auburn families during the holiday season.

The area business owners received Business Passes to the basketball teams’ home games. Accompanying the Business Passes were letters in which the business owners were thanked for their generous and continuous contributions to Auburn High School. The Passes have been well received, and many business owners are taking the opportunity to see AHS athletes in action.

The local senior citizens viewed a dress rehearsal for the musical Bye Bye Birdie. They were treated to pastries made by Stuco and NHS students. The evening turned out to be a wonderful time for everyone!

Additionally, the local senior citizens are taking advantage of the NHS students who volunteered to rake (fall season) or shovel. Jeff Croteau and Evan Pluff are two of the many students who have already helped residents in need.

Community Outreach Update

The Community Outreach Committee met on 11/4/08 and finalized the plans for the following upcoming events:

The Auburn community senior citizens have been invited to attend an open dress rehearsal of the musical Bye Bye Birdie. This dress rehearsal will take place on Thursday, November 20.

Santa’s Workshop will be held for the Auburn community children. Children will have the opportunity to meet Santa, have their faces painted, and decorate cookies, in addition to other holiday related activities. A tentative date has been set for Thursday, December 18 at 4:00. Parents are asked to donate a toy or a small monetary gift, which will then be given to Auburn Youth and Family Services.

The area business owners will soon receive Business Passes to the basketball teams’ home games. The letters, in which the business owners are thanked for their generous and continuous contributions to Auburn High School, will be in the mail next week.

On a final note, the Halloween Haunted House, put on by Student Council and Ms. Carlson, was a great success. The children of Auburn had a spooktacular time! Part of the proceeds collected will be given to the LeBlanc family to help Alex.

Welcome to Community Outreach

The purpose of the Community Outreach Committee is to help build a positive relationship between Auburn’s community members and the Auburn High School student body.

The Community Outreach Committee met for the first time this year on October 6, 2008. Members discussed activities that took place last year and brainstormed possible events/activities for this school year. The following ideas were raised at the meeting:

*    Stuco’s RSVP (Raising Student Voice and Participation) to survey faculty
*    Pasta Dinner w/Bingo for senior citizens
*    Mascot available for Chamber activities
*    Christmas workshop for kids
*    Homecoming more of a community event – craft fair (maybe for next year)
*    Egg hunt at Easter
*    Town yard sale with high school as base
*    Senior Citizen Ball
*    Free passes to games for contributing business owners
*    Students posting artwork in the community (and making it available for community members to purchase)

Committee members also discussed the many community service activities that already take place (Student athletes, National Honor Society members, and Student Council members already participate in mandatory community service. Halloween Haunted House and Thanksgiving can-drive for Auburn Youth and Family services is also organized by Stuco. NHS students rake and shovel for community senior citizens.).

Just last week students from the National Honor Society volunteered at the Auburn Public Library’s Annual Book Sale. The students who helped received accolades for their participation from Director Joan Noonan, as stated in the October 15 issue of the Auburn News.
